Food Policy: Integrating health, environment and society, by Tim Lang, David Barling, Martin Caraher

For over half a century, food policy has mapped a path for progress based upon a belief that the right mix of investment, scientific input, and human skills could unleash a surge in productive capacity which would resolve humanity's food-related health and welfare problems. It assumed that more food would yield greater health and happiness by driving down prices, increasing availability, and feeding more mouths. In the 21st century, this policy mix is quietly becoming unstuck. In a world marred by obesity alongside malnutrition, climate change alongside fuel and energy crises, water stress alongside more mouths to feed, and social inequalities alongside unprecedented accumulation of wealth, the old rubric of food policy needs re-evaluation. This book explores the enormity of what the new policy mix must address, taking the approach that food policy must be inextricably linked with public with public health, environmental damage, and social inequalities to be effective.

Written by three authors with differing backgrounds, one in political science, another in environmental health and health promotion, and the third in social psychology, this book reflects the myriad of perspectives essential to a comprehensive view of modern food policy. It attempts to make sense of what is meant by food policy; explores whether the term has any currency in current policy discourse, assesses whether current policies help or hinder what happens; judges whether consensus can triumph in the face of competing bids for understanding; looks at all levels of governance, across the range of actors in the food system, from companies and the state to civil society and science; considers what direction food policies are taking, not jsut in the UK, but internationally; assesse who (and what) gains or loses in the making of these food policies; and identifies a modern framework for judging how good or limited processes of policy making are.

This book provides a major comprehensive review of current and past food policy, thinking and proposing the need for what the authors call an ecological public health approach to food policy. Nothing less will be fit for the 21st century.

Review

"In Food Policy: Integrating Health, Environment, and Society, Tim Lang et al. analyze and effectively illustrate the increasing complexity and tension between environmental and social-ecological issues and their connections to food policy. In doing this they provide copious evidence of the shortcomings of contemporary food policies across the globe. They identify problems and discuss solutions that would move global food policy toward an 'ecological public health' model that acknowledges food as an important intersection of society, economy, and culture." -- Michael J. Miller, Agriculture and Human Values

The Birth of the Republic, 1763-89 (The Chicago History of American Civilization), by Edmund S. Morgan

In one remarkable quarter-century, thirteen quarrelsome
colonies were transformed into a nation. Edmund S. Morgan's
classic account of the Revolutionary period shows how the
challenge of British taxation started the Americans on a
search for constitutional principles to protect their
freedom and eventually led to the Revolution.

Morgan demonstrates that these principles were not
abstract doctrines of political theory but grew instead out
of the immediate needs and experiences of the colonists.
They were held with passionate conviction, and incorporated,
finally, into the constitutions of the new American states
and of the United States.

Though the basic theme of the book and his assessment
of what the Revolution achieved remain the same, Morgan has
updated the revised edition of The Birth of the
Republic (1977) to include some textual and stylistic
changes as well as a substantial revision of the
Bibliographic Note.

The best, most readable intro to the Revolution
By Robert James
Edmund Morgan remains America's most readable colonial historian after a half-century of writing. This short volume is still my favorite book about the American Revolution. Written in clear, readable prose that anyone with half-a-brain could understand and enjoy, "The Birth of the Republic" covers all the major bases from 1763 to the Constitutional Convention in 1789. Primarily a political history, readers seeking for a military history should look elsewhere. But for almost fifty years, this book has remained in print, luring readers into a deeper appreciation of our most important piece of history: when the American colonies began to separate themselves from the British Empire, deciding that one's political liberties were more sacred than loyalty to a crown. While in retrospect we can now see that there was little tyranny actually being practiced against the colonies, the fear itself of what dangerous precedent might bring remains with us today. A truly marvelous book, both for a general audience and for those with historical awareness. I first read this book as a student; now, as a history teacher, I give it to my own students with the greatest of anticipated joy: that they too will find this short book as wonderful as any they have ever read.

The basic facts of the American Revolution explained
By Daniel Jolley
Originally published in 1956 and revised in 1977, this book is probably familiar to a couple of generations of college students. This may well be the most accessible overview of the formative history of America. As an overview, of course, it does not go into great detail about the myriad of topics debated by historians still today, but it does hit most of the predominant features of the Revolutionary story. Morgan builds his work around the premise that the Founding Fathers did indeed operate on principle in building a new nation and that the struggle eventually framed itself as a pursuit of equality among all men. He admits that many of the decisions made by the leaders of the Revolution did equate to economic or property gains for themselves, but he argues that this is not contradictory at all with a commitment to liberty because liberty in the 18th century essentially hinged on land ownership. He also rationalizes the contradiction of slavery's continued existence being incorporated into the Constitution by arguing that the convention delegates acted out of urgent concern for the future of a government in its death throes at the hands of a powerless Congress as set up by the Articles of Confederation--without such compromise, the important new Constitution could not have been ratified by a sufficient number of states before the young nation collapsed at the feet of the British and Spanish.
Morgan first examines the increasingly rocky relationship between the English Parliament and the colonies--specifically, the debate over taxation and infringement of liberties that led up to the declaration of independence. He devotes a few pages to the war but does not delve very deeply into military matters. Morgan does an excellent job explaining why the Articles of Confederation failed and how the problems of that system were widely recognized, frankly debated, and resolved in the creation of a new national government established upon the bedrock of a new federal Constitution.
Aside from Morgan's excellent treatment of the birth of the American republic, this book also features the texts of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and federal Constitution; a timeline of important events; and a pretty expansive discussion of source materials published before 1977. In sum, this book is ideal for anyone just wanting to learn or review the pivotal events surrounding the creation of the United States without having to sift through scholarly criticisms and debates of important yet secondary aspects of the story.

The Birth of the Republic
By A Customer
Morgan's book, The Birth of the Republic, is a well-written book of a very interesting time in American History. His book uses great detail to describe this unrevealed part of history. Morgan does not just describe what was going on in these times but he tells why these events occurred. We get not only the story, but also the meaning behind the story. Through the use of Morgan's words and my own imagination I now have the understanding of why "Revolution" occurred.
Morgans book taught us about the times of the revolutionary period in American history. Morgan discussed the taxation and legislation from Parliament and the Americans loyalty to them. Morgan's book shows the challenge of British taxation and why the Americans fought to protect their freedom. He discussed the constitution and to what degree it controlled and helped heal the American society. The book illustrated a division of Americans, turning against each other and becoming an unconstrained nation to fight for the rights of individuals.
I enjoyed Morgan's book because he described the thought and reasoning of the Americans better than I had ever perceived. He used thought rather than facts to discuss the why of the revolutionary period. He supported his why with the reality of what had occurred. Morgan used great judgment in concluding what this period of American history represented. He used clearly cut issues to put meaning behind the acts of the people of this time.
Morgan only had a few flaws in my opinion. He reflected back too much on some of the past experiences. He used too many references that related to what was happening. Morgan also tended to repeat himself in making many points. All of this was not necessary in order to get his point across.
This book presents the American Revolution as a great conflict, not just of men or nations, but of ideas. It tells, not just about the battles, but about the reasons behind the battles. Morgan has done a wonderful job explaining and teaching this part of history. Anyone using this book will get a great understanding of what the American Revolution was about, and why the constitutional principles are so powerful.

Are bodies sexy? How? In what sorts of ways? Sexy Bodies investigates the production of sexual bodies and sexual practices, of sexualities which are dyke, bi, transracial, and even hetero. It celebrates lesbian and queer sexualities but also explores what runs underneath and within all sexualities, discovering what is fundamentally weird and strange about all bodies, all carnalities.

Looking at a pleasurable variety of cultural forms and texts, the contributors consider the particular charms of girls and horses, from National Velvet to Marnie; discuss figures of the lesbian body from vampires to tribades to tomboys; uncover 'virtual' lesbians in the fiction of Jeanette Winterson; track desire in the music of legendary Blues singers; and investigate the ever-scrutinised and celebrated body of Elizabeth Taylor. The collection includes two important pieces of fiction by Mary Fallon and Nicole Brossard.

Sexy Bodies makes new connections between and amongst bodies, cruising the borders of the obscene, the pleasurable, the desirable and the hitherto unspoken rethinking sexuality anew as deeply and strangely sexy.

Review
...this collection of critical, queer, feminist, erotic writings is exceptional, bringing embodied clarity to critical thinking. Sexy Bodies transgresses the normative stylistic boundries of academic language and prose, re-formulating rather than re-defining how we can speak and think and write... Not content to write about sex and bodies, the editors asked the contributers to write as sex and bodies... the result is energizing.... this book accepts the indefinable, engorges us and consumes us. Much like good sex.... I savour this volume for its diversity in thought, culture, style, and vision of sexuality..

EVEN..I LOVED IT! (and I'm the mom!!) lol *Always BELIEVE*
By H. Thompson
I have been buying all the Disney Fairy books for my little girl and LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! I so very much wish when I was growing up they had all these different faries! She and her cousins are always running in the woods "finding' the woods faries and the water fairiese ecr..it' soo cute! I started reading her books when her bus was late and when shes in her music class after school. Now I can actually talk to my daughter like "look! I think silvermist was her!" and she's in awe looking at anything even the morning dew has become sacred :) same with snow and the sparkles.. Queen Clarion... the head of the faries is so delightful and not often in the books. This was fun as it showed they needed eachothers different special talents to work together, and find queen clarion. (i wont spoil where lol)

That each fairy is completely different than eachother shows kids that we ARE all different and also that ust because perhaps you wish you had the talent someone else has..they also wish to have a talent they don't have and so don't hate eachother from ealously which is real life with kids.. Vidia is always nasty..oh goodness! and Tink finds ways to get her to chill out which i love as well.

Best shipping deal is to buy a bunch from the same dealer (or if you have Prime than nevermind haha) they will usually always give you a shipping deal.. this series will I guarentee become addicting so order all of them while you can. It's the best book collection written today for girls in my opinion. Yes I also like the American Doll collection however when I win the lotto which won't happen cuz I don't play it ..well.. hahahaaa those are terrific books too yes so those 2 series are the only 2 i absolutely trust that I dont have to read first before she does. The Disney Fairies are PERFECT IN EVER MAGICAL WAY!

Queen Clarion's Secret
By Louise D. Luna
I purchased about 15 of the Disney fairy books, which I thought would be great summer reading for my 7 year old granddaughter. Queen Clarion was the first one she selected. Even though she has needed a little help with some of the vocabulary, she tells me she has enjoyed reading it . I also bought this book for my 35 year old niece who's name is Lisel and sent it to her as a surprise. As she read it she discovered why I had sent her the book. These books are great reading for little girls. Great bonding time!

Review

“There could not possibly be a better time to rediscover the classic work that taught a generation to interrogate and challenge the economic forces and corporate predations that betray the democratic possibilities of public education. This powerful book is more relevant today than when it first aroused the outrage and the passion of the nation thirty years ago. I hope that it will reinforce the battle to resist coarseness and vulgarity of those efficiency technicians and business-minded technocrats in Washington who are riding high now in their efforts to establish uniformity, subservience, utility, and intellectual conformity as the guiding principals of public education. The sweep and brilliance of this work is the perfect antidote to toxic and misguided policies that are anti-child, anti-intellect, anti-egalitarian, and which need to be denounced, defied, and fearlessly rejected. As such, it deserves a wider readership than ever.”
—Jonathan Kozol, author, Savage Inequalities and Shame of the Nation

“Nearly 40 years after its original publication, Schooling in Capitalist America remains one of the most trenchant and relevant explorations of the class character of the American educational system.”
—Erik Olin Wright, president, American Sociological Association

“The reissue of Schooling in Capitalist America is a welcome event. Its message that schools foster personality traits that are highly valued in society has been affirmed in much subsequent research. The book properly directs attention away from an exclusive focus on cognition as the principal determinant of inequality and its perpetuation over generations. Noncognitive traits matter greatly, and they
are shaped by schools and families. These messages are timely reminders that contemporary cognitive-test-oriented educational policy and policy evaluation focus only on a narrow set of the important skills that schools create.”
—James Heckman, University of Chicago; winner, 2000 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics

A Classic
By Uptown Philosopher
This book will forever change the way you think about education in our society. It does something which few other books on education do: it looks critically at how educational institutions are related to the broader social system we live under--capitalism. It looks at how schools, like other basic social institutions in capitalist society, create favourable conditions for the accumulation of profit.

Think about it: the lower wages are, the higher the profits for employers. The more technically skilled workers are, the higher profits are. The more punctual, obedient and docile workers are---the higher the profits. Thus, an education system structured around the needs of capitalism tends to create a schooling experience that shuns creativity, critical thinking, and individual development. Moreover, it is often in school that we learn to respect authority, believe in the system we live under, and accept class inequalities as natural.

In this painstakingly researched book, Bowles and Gintis detail how this process works. They argue that schools under capitalism tend to foster types of "personal development compatible with the relationships of dominance and subordinacy in the economic sphere... while creating surpluses of skilled labor sufficiently extensive to render effective the prime weapon of the employer in disciplining labor--the power to hire and fire."

This is a serious book, written by professional economists. It is a tour de force. It is a must-read, in my opinion, for anyone who wants to think critically about how social systems and educational institutions are related.

A must read for anyone who questions regarding the state of American society. And for people who want a better understanding of our political system and its effects on socail institutions and class system. So thorough and well written it is easy to comprehend for academics and layman alike.

Cross-Examination: Science and Techniques, by Larry S. Pozner, Roger Dodd

Cross-Examination: Science and Techniques, Second Edition, Larry Pozner and Roger Dodd continue their outstanding tradition of helping attorneys conduct commanding cross-examinations. The second edition offers deeper analysis of cross-examination methods, with more integration and interrelationship of techniques and principles.

The authors recognize that trials and juries have changed considerably since the publication of the First Edition in 1993. Evolving admissibility standards and the Internet age pose new challenges to the cross-examiner. In analyzing thousands of new trial experiences, Pozner and Dodd present efficient techniques to confront these challenges, and ultimately, help attorneys develop cross-examination skills that are critical to trial success. In this new Second Edition, the authors:

  • Demonstrate how opponents' objections can be the springboard for deeper and broader cross-examinations.
  • Show how cross-examination can be sequenced to teach the theory of the case in the best way, and to literally expand the rules of admissibility.
  • Explain how "loops" (the practice of incorporating and repeating key phrases and terms in successive questions to the witness) are used to rename witnesses and exhibits.
  • Describe the use of "double loops" to discredit opposing expert witnesses. Effective cross-examination is a science with established guidelines, identifiable techniques, and definable methods. Attorneys can learn how to control the outcome with careful preparation, calculated strategy, effective skills, and a disciplined demeanor.

The book also includes explanation of how to:

  • Use voir dire to create great jurors
  • Use a fact-driven investigation to develop a winning theory
  • Use a witness's own words to follow your theme and theory
  • Control the runaway witness
  • Communicate winning theories in opening, cross, and closing
  • Use loops to box in the witness
  • Use tactical sequencing to create the most powerful cross
  • Convert a witness's silence into admission of fact
  • Induce the witness to voice your pre-selected words
  • Prepare for devastating impeachment
  • Close off any escape routes for the witness
  • Punish the evasive or "I don't know" witness

Excellent book

Excellent book to learn the right way to cross examine at depositions and trial. I have had the book version for years and find the electronic copy very handy.

Helpful stuff, but not user friendly
By Stephen Chakwin
The best thing about this book is its attempt to systematize the difficult and too-often mysticised craft of cross-examination. The worst thing about it is that the authors did not apply the level of thinking that they advocate for cross-examination to the design and content of the book, which is poorly organized, diffuse, and a general nuisance to deal with because of its pervasive shapelessness. It's well worth dealing with the demands of the book because it is the best thought-out discussion of cross-examination in print. ...if you can figure out what the authors are trying to say about how to organize a cross and get through their Rube Goldberg "system" of chapters and rules and topic cards and sequence-of-events charts and page preparations -- I eventually gave up on their explanations and started outlining the book in my own way, upon which the sloppy, ill-considered form stopped mattering and the book's powerful insights into the whole process became comprehensible. Ultimately, examining witnesses at trial is about understanding, eliciting, and explaining facts to people who have to decide where truth lies (so to speak). The authors here give more information about how to do this in more ways than anyone else. If you want to "get" what's in this book, you will have to work hard and deal with stupid obstacles to learning and recurrent barriers to clear communication. Get over it. That's a large part about what getting ready to deal with witnesses at trial is all about anyway. Might as well get the practice in a safe environment. The book seems to be written from the perspective of a primarily criminal-law oriented practice in a jurisidiction in which the lawyers have access to basically all the information that will be presented at trial. To me, a civil practice New York lawyer, that seems about as real as the Star Wars movies, but there's still a lot of value here. If you are new to this area of the law, this book is the best way to get a sense of what you can do with cross (at least until I write my book on the subject :-)) If you are experienced, it will give you ways to fine-tune your knowledge and skills. Either way, it will give you good training in patience and delayed gratification -- essential skills for a trial lawyer. If I got to break my rating down, I would give the book a (generous) two stars for accessibilty and a (conservative) five stars for concepts and information.

Al Schneider on Coins, by Al Schneider

Al Schneider on Coins was first published in 1975. I received a letter some time after it was put on the market for sale. The letter was from a young man that had purchased the book. He stated that he had ordered the book via mail and was very anxious to get it. However, when he received it he was very upset. It was only about a hundred pages long and he felt he had paid a great deal of money for it. He said he threw it across the room and it slid under the radiator in his bedroom. It lay there for some time. One day, during some serious house cleaning, he swept the dust out from under the radiator. The book came out with the dust. Now, his anger dissipated, he sat on the edge of his bed and opened the pages to see what he could see. Long after this he decided to write me the letter. He had long since read all the tricks in the book and pondered over them. However, even after that he would pick up the book and read various parts of it. He said each time he did that he would discover something new. To him it was a book that he would never finish reading. He thanked me for writing it and said it was his favorite book. Many people have pressured me to come out with it again. The age of the Internet somewhat simplifies things so I am making the book available again. The pictures have been digitally copied from one of my last copies and the text has been reentered into a computer. A few things have been updated to improve grammar and fix mistakes in the material. For the most part it is the way it was back in 1975. The pictures are sometimes confusing. A few things in the book have been improved such as "Cross Cards" and "Coins Across."

One of the Best Books on Coin Magic Ever!
By James McGowan
While I don't have this latest release, I do own a copy of the original printing from 1975. This is one of my most read magic books, and I have most of the coin magic books available. I also have most of the books written by Mr. Schneider but I find that I come back to his coin magic book more than any of them. The concepts he writes about are not all covered in other coin magic books. His views on magic theory in general are covered here and it was my first exposure to Mr. Schneider's revolutionary techniques. Any magician, from novice to expert, will benefit greatly from this book. Al Schneider has written many other books since this one, on topics from magic to quantum mechanics, but his discourse on coin magic is the one that serves well as an introduction to this magic legend's extraordinary knowledge of human perception and its relation to amazing and entertaining magic!
