Impressive book, but not designed as introductory material.

Basic premise: measurements of the internal and external features of the Great Pyramid show advanced knowledge of the earth and its cycles, working in accurate measurements of the polar radius, days per year (tropical, sidereal, and anomalistic), years in the precession cycle, and the size of earth's orbit - all while the interior design demonstrates a description of mankind's spiritual development through reincarnations and gradual advancement towards enlightenment and freedom from this plane of mortal bodies with the occasional intervention of helpful Great Initiates/Messiahs/ascended masters... with the length of internal pyramid passageways also offering a prophetic timeline of one inch per year (the ancient "pyramid inch" being 1.00106 modern British inches) covering ancient history and future prophecy especially regarding mankind's spiritual development and the return of a Messiah.

This book is far from a light introduction to these subjects. If I had not already been researching related topics for over twenty years (and writing some myself, most recently End Times and 2019) I would not be "initiated" enough to grasp much of what Lemesurier has put together. But because I have been doing extensive research, I am highly impressed with this book, despite several key differences between my own conclusions and the author's interpretation of the messages of the pyramid builders.
We both assume that the builders created the pyramid approximately 10,500 B.C. near the time of the last pole shift. We both assume the builders were people from an ancient, advanced civilization - perhaps one of several that have risen and fallen in the distant past, as Plato, the Egyptians, the Buddhists, and the Maya believe. PL assumes they were building the pyramid just prior to the last cataclysm; I assume survivors did so just after the pole shift (as it is aligned to our current cardinal directions.)
PL assumes human beings go through many reincarnations and that early Christianity taught the same, despite Paul's version that the world knows today denying reincarnation. I agree. PL assumes the pyramid timelines indicate multiple Messiahs coming to help us soon (at least four in the next few centuries.) I cannot see evidence for four visitations anywhere else in my research, though one idea someone suggested could be that after the upcoming pole shift/Messianic event there could be repeated alien intervention to help us out. (While I assume there are ETs out there, I dislike theories relying on their intervention to explain our past... when we clearly have evidence of advanced human civilizations that rise and fall in Earth's past which explain things like building the pyramids...)

PL's future timeline of events is largely based on measurements of the ideal pyramid indicated by the outer foundation sockets, not by the pyramid actually built - which was not quite as large. So for example, the height of the actual, existing pyramid, if completed to its apex, would be 5780 inches high - which I have suggested could correspond to completion of the world in Hebrew year 5780, or our 2019 - which fits many other astronomical correlations to my dating of prophetic events. But PL uses more ideal numbers on a slightly larger pyramid and while we agree that the missing capstone does represent a Messianic completion of the world, on page 381 he admits for his capstone measurements that "'the stone the builders rejected' would have been too big for the pyramid as built." His reasoning is sound, and I understand his conclusions and why he reaches them, but it leads to a Messianic event in 2052, not the 2019 I have otherwise reached. The author also sees dozens of events foretold by the pyramid's timeline such as 1845, 1914, 1985, 1999, 2034, 2039, 2116, 2134, 2238, 2279, 2368, 2499, 2754, 2989, 3054, 3279... and others. He even admits that there are multiple ways to interpret possible changes in scale indicators that have led him to ignore the inch=year rate of most of the passageways, leading to multiple possible results of future dates.
Of course I find his references to events from 2010 to 2020 the most interesting, including on page 154 a "river of fire" in 2014 AD (though he admits this could be more like 2016-2017, depending on how one interprets things.

But the reason I purchased this book (though I now wish I had done so years earlier) was because of an online reference to comments I made about my next book on the Antichrist. I have several biblical and astronomical clues pointing to the day when the Antichrist (whether real or symbolic) goes into a Temple in Jerusalem and proclaims himself to be God. This is June 6, 2016. Someone commented on one of my posts about this and said that Peter Lemesurier had written about this date (June 6, no year) as well, having a Messianic connotation. And he does link this date to a connection between the pyramid and Bethlehem, which gives one more potential clue pointing to the date I have already reached. If you have a solid background it these subjects, already having read books like The Dimensions of Paradise, The Message of the Sphinx, Hamlet's Mill, or End Times and 2019: The End of the Mayan Calendar and the Countdown to Judgment Day - then you should appreciate this information-packed book. If this is your introduction to such topics, be prepared to go slowly. It is an impressive book, but not designed as introductory material.

A Book Full of Skewed Conclusions Due To Missing Clues

For the record, I have spent many years researching the Great Pyramid, and have written several books in my four-volume "Language of God" book series with substantial portions devoted to deciphering the true meaning behind this impressive stone pillar. In fact, about 200 pages in my 800-page book "The Language of God in History" discusses the amazing prophetic significance of the physical location of the Great Pyramid, and in my book"The Language of God in Prophecy," over 300 pages of that 800-page book are devoted to showing the hidden meaning of the interior of the Great Pyramid. I also discuss why I call this immense pyramid the Pillar of Enoch.

While writing my books, I read through Peter Lemesurier's "Great Pyramid Decoded", and though I found many of the drawings and diagrams extremely helpful when searching for the hidden purpose and meaning of the Great Pyramid, the majority of the book's analytical sections are grossly in error due to the author's incorrect presuppositions concerning many aspects of this ancient monument. This is because Lemesurier did not have any understanding of the connection that the Great Pyramid has to Sacred Astronomy and the godly Sethites and Shemites that lived in Egypt prior to and after the Great Flood, or to its purpose as an altar to Yahweh God with a direct allegorical connection to the crucifixion of Christ.

My book club version of Lemesurier's book is a very professionally produced hard cover full of colorful photos, and diagrams done with much care. Unfortunately, because Lemesurier totally misses the Zodiac connection of the Great Pyramid, and the fact that the Christian view of the Zodiac, called "the Gospel in the Stars" is a major key to deciphering it, the book is also filled with every sort of perversion and lie imaginable concerning the truth behind the structure's internal passages and chambers. For example, the author completely ignores the testimony of the 1st Century Historian Josephus, who said with conviction that - prior to the Great Flood - the righteous Sethites (and ancestors to Abraham and Israel) invented the science of Astronomy, and built two great stone structures in Egypt to record their findings, which were still standing intact at Josephus' writing!

After doing exhaustive research, I am convinced that these two architectural structures or complexes of Sethite origin could be none other than the Great Pyramid and Great Sphinx at Giza in Egypt, and the two large Old Kingdom Pyramids at Dahshur. To prove this, my book "The Language of God in History" analyzes the Old Kingdom Pyramids at Giza and Dahshur in regard to their celestial, terrestrial and prophetic connections, and shows how they tie in to Bible Prophecy.

Totally contrary to the beliefs of the righteous ancestors of the Israelites, Lemesurier's book promulgates the idea that the Great Pyramid is a New Age type religious monument that says all faiths lead to God, and that reincarnation and not Resurrection is the way that we will find everlasting life. For this reason, although Peter Lemesurier's "Great Pyramid Decoded" is listed in the extensive bibliography for my books "The Language of God in History" and "The Language of God in Prophecy", it is not categorized under "Pre-Flood Wisdom" because it is flagrantly Paganistic and New Age, asserting that all faiths are represented in the Great Pyramid's passages, and not just the Judeo-Christian heritage. For this reason, I have listed his book under "Paganism, False Religious Mythology."

the best, first book to discover ruby ...

i've had a tenuous relationship w/ ruby for the past 18 months, which began when a friend sent me the 'pickaxe' and agile rails books over the 2007 holidays. that duo is widely regarded as the de facto introduction to programming with ruby on rails, however, i'd qualify that statement to perhaps only apply to working professionals coming over from another language/framework. i both 1) don't think rails is the best framework for a new ruby coder (sinatra is), and 2) don't think the Pragmatic book is the best introduction to ruby. the well-grounded rubyist didn't exist when i got started, so the first book to pique my interest was the 'beginning ruby' book by peter cooper (apress), and while i was very happy to have found that title over a year ago and having purchased several books and screencasts related to ruby since, the well-grounded rubyist is absolutely the best book to become familiar with ruby at present. the reasoning is consistent w/ my reviews of other books for other programming languages, and is such that there is /NO REPLACEMENT/ for the author being a first-rate educator. a quality instructor is somewhat selfless, always focused on presenting the subject as a first priority, and particularly not how the subject relates to themselves. most programming books are written by practitioners, and since ruby hasn't become particularly available as an option for computer-science students in most programs, there is a very definite void in regard to the number of real teachers writing texts on ruby. i had struggled against my previous experiences coding (asm) and while i learned a lot of the tactics to code in ruby over the past year and half, i never really understood 'why' things worked the way they did. whereas before reading this book i was primarily remixing other people's code, now i'm writing my own code and it feels much more natural. just as "jQuery in action" seemed to open my eyes to the world of javascript, this Manning title has finally opened up the rubiverse and to say that i'm ecstatic really just begins to do this book justice. i can't imagine that you wouldn't find this book the best place to start w/ ruby at this time ...

important read

If you have any doubts about your Ruby knowledge, then you should read this book. After months of frustration while looking at source code and wasting time with Why's Poignant Guide, I made it a point to read through all pages of the Well-Grounded Rubyist. Once I was done, the difficulty was gone. Now I can read Rails code with ease, all the code makes sense and I feel like I entered a whole new world. David Black guides the reader through the topics he feels are most important. I resisted the temptation to put down the book and start programming, but I am glad I waited. The book is so useful that having finished it, you will be on a new level and your next task will be to learn how Ruby's powerful features can be combined into non-trivial frameworks. If you skip this book, you risk writing mediocre code, at least until you are forced to learn the features and techniques of the language...the hard way.

Very disciplined, accurate, language tutor

David Black has written a thoughtfully balanced book on Ruby basics and best practices. Thankfully, it doesn't waste a single page on things better off on a website somewhere. For example, no elaboration of differences between Ruby 1.9.1 and earlier versions. (Which are, in fact, found on the book's website!)

The book is written referencing Ruby 1.9.1. Be aware that as of this writing, there isn't a 1-click installer on the Ruby language site for 1.9.1 for Windows, and the binaries-only download doesn't include a few key DLLs. If you want to continue using 1.8.6 until an up-to-date installer comes along, the bulk of the book will still be perfectly usable, however. The last note on Windows is that there is text sprinkled throughout the book on such things as paths and other configuration minutia which is specific to Mac and Unix installs. This should not trouble the readers intended for this book in the least.

As a practical matter, since the author spends no time on basic programming concepts, you'll have to have some programming experience to take best advantage of this book. Expressed differently, there is no wasted text for its audience. As one with such experience, I found this to be a perfectly-conceived bootstrap approach to the language. Anyone already having basic OO concepts already should have no difficulty following this book (mine being Smalltalk).

The author and publisher appear to have taken great pains in the flow, layout, and editing to produce a virtually error-free work. I'm enormously appreciative of that; for its own sake, of course, but also because error-riddled computer book are all too common. There are some very minor errors posted on the book's blog on the publisher's website, but they are trivial, in my opinion (programmers are persnickety, particularly about semantics, and rightfully so).

Black's intent is to walk the reader through key aspects of the language, OO as it directly relates to Ruby, and a slice of the core library. Take note of the last comment - this is NOT a comprehensive language reference covering the entire core library. Instead, the author is trying to cover those portions of the library he deems most important to understand when learning Ruby. He succeeds. While the book starts out with the simplest of Ruby's elements, such as syntax, by the end of the volume, you're well into more advanced usages, including reflection, overriding core behavior, and more.

One of the best programming books I've bought in terms of clarity, presentation, and flow. And over 25 years, there have been a lot of them.

Haynes Manual

I get one of these for every vehicle I purchase and let me tell you, they make any person with little to no knowledge on how to work on vehicles an expert in what needs to be done to fix your vehicles problem. Some things need special tools and require a certified mechanic but changing oil, spark plugs, brakes, bleeding your brake lines, etc., that you would typically bring your vehicle to a mechanic for and pay out the wazoo, you get a picture by picture tutorial on how to do it yourself (if you have the time) and save big money (and boost your self esteem).

Chilton's is a good reference but I think it's suffering due to availability of so much information off the internet. Great for finding part numbers, but when it comes to installation & removal using internet videos can be better.

Even SW has some basis on real events

I heard about this book from Matt Wilkins's YouTube channel, and if you're a Star Wars fan that likes to take a deeper look into the universe, from a creative perspective, than this is the book for you. This is the first of a three-volume series and it covers everything SW that has EVER been on screen, large or small; including the things people don't talk about anymore and the Star Tours ride at Disneyland.

There's something to learn in every chapter, and every contributor really outdid themselves in their knowledge and research, but I particularly appreciated the piece on Return of the Jedi because it seemed like there was more going on behind the scenes than in the film itself. One minor criticism I have with the book was the section discussing the Clone Wars cartoons; it felt a bit biased to me which contrasted the rest of the chapters' objectivity in my opinion.

This is a must-read for anyone interested in how Star Wars became the pop-culture icon that it is today; breaking through to pretty much every generation since it debuted in the 1970s. I should mention; however, that while I found the book entertaining it wasn't published for that purpose. It catches you up on the cinematic universe right to The Force Awakens and is a long overdue collection of SW world-building stories.

DELIGHTFUL.

Simply delightful.

I'm of the generation that saw Star Wars when in elementary school. It's had a profound effect on my life. So when I read about this book on Facebook, I was excited. And how was it? Far better than I imagined it could be.

It takes a linear approach. It begins pre-Star Wars and the narrative covers everything to the cinematic universe and stops just shy of "The Force Awakens" (which will be out shortly after the book's publication). Along the way every film and TV show is visited.

My favorite essay, simply because it's a topic I've invested quite a bit of time in myself, covers "The Star Wars Holiday Special". The first part is summary, since few of the readers will have seen it, and I didn't learn anything there. Then, though, the author went into the background and production, much of which was new to me.

"Ewoks" and "Droids" share a chapter. There's one for the Ewok movies too -- which I may have to rewatch. They're in the "Star Wars" section of our DVD shelves somewhere. There's even a chapter covering the creation and content of "Star Tours"!

And then there are the surprises. I knew that the book was going to cover the Prequels (which I loathe), and I knew that they would dominate the second half. To my shock, though, the essays continued to be fascinating, entertaining, and informative. Even things to which I have NO connection, the second "Clone Wars" series and "Rebels", have essays that I enjoyed greatly.

To conclude, if you're a fan at all, then you'll find something here to delight you. And probably far more than you expect. The different viewpoints remain refreshing, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every essay.

The Master Dentistry series provides a good overview of the subject areas and I found them particularly useful during exam times. The text is appropriately supplemented with great diagrams and the layout of the books makes all the subject areas easy to access and find.

At the end of each chapter there are self assessment questions which were really useful and would aid any student’s learning. Each chapter has a helpful overview and learning objectives are provided throughout each chapter.

The books give a great summary of all the subject areas they cover but need to be used in conjunction with a more detailed textbook. I used them quite often if I didn't understand a certain part of a lecture as the wording is easy to understand and is uncomplicated. They're a must for any dental student’s bookshelf!
