Author's description of the book:

The growing acceptance of building information modeling (BIM) is an acknowledgment that the building industry has fundamentally changed. The information contained in a BIM can be used for other purposes such as predicting energy consumption, cost, scheduling, clashes between systems, and can even be leveraged for facilities management uses. Entire suites of software theoretically can hook into the virtual building description for specialized uses.

This book addresses many key roles that BIM is playing in shaping professional offices and project delivery processes. It is a professional design guide for architects, engineers, and contractors (and students!) concerning the principles and specific applications of BIM. Those wishing to understand how to make the transition from CAD to BIM will benefit as well those looking to push the boundaries of digital technologies. The book is divided into two parts: Fundamentals and Application.

Fundamentals defines terms, explores issues, and predicts future opportunities that BIM offers. Many key ideas are introduced including parametrics, the roles of BIM for different stakeholders, the single model versus federated models, the BIM Execution Plan, and what is on the computing horizon. It is subdivided into five chapters: BIM Overview, Stakeholders and BIM's Many Roles, Data Exchange and Interoperability, BIM Implementation, and Beyond Basic BIM.

Application: project case studies, focuses on specific examples of how BIM is actually being implemented and successfully integrated into four offices. These firms provide vignettes on specific buildings that show successes and missed opportunities and give advice to other professionals. The architecture and construction firms were asked to describe a project, explain their experiences with BIM, discuss successes and opportunities to improve, and give advice about what they might have done differently. About the Author

Karen Kensek teaches at the University of Southern California, School of Architecture. For over 25 years, her teaching and research have concentrated on the evolving role of digital design and its applications to the building profession. Her current research focuses on BIM analytics. She has organized seven building information modeling symposia at USC (2007–2013) with themes on education; sustainable design; construction and fabrication; analytical modeling and evidenced-based design; BIM management, implementation, coordination, and evaluation; and the future of BIM. Under her leadership, the School received the Autodesk Revit BIM Experience Award in 2008 and a BIM award�from the AIA Technology in Architectural Practice knowledge community in 2010. She is a past president of the Association of Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA).

Outstanding book

I bought the print version of this book. The contents are excellent. Most of the book provides a deep overview of BIM, the stakeholders and implementation. Chapter 5 is the best chapter, covering issues "Beyond Basic BIM." The last part of the book has four "project Case Studies" from different firms. Lots of great graphics and description. This book goes way beyond "overview." I have several BIM books that I like (such as the Eastman handbook). This one ranks right up there with the best.

Great quick read on the state of BIM

I got the book at the USC BIM Conference August 22, 2014 and read it over the weekend. It is an excellent, clear treatment of the current state of BIM and should be required reading for every Architecture student and every practicing architect.

About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. I have completed my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Statistics without a little knowledge about Optimization. Fortunately, I came across this book. This book has played a big role by creating for me a career in Operations Research. It contains many industrial problems to demonstrate the usefulness of the subject. It replaces the instructor by its good explanatory texts. With this book, you are guaranteed to have a break through in the area of Operations research.

From Deterministic to Stochastic

This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

About the Author
Dr. Hamilton received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1978. He has taught statistics courses from undergraduate to advanced graduate levels at the University of New Hampshire and has written numerous statistics texts and software manuals, including MODERN DATA ANALYSIS, REGRESSION WITH GRAPHICS, and DATA ANALYSIS FOR SOCIAL SCIENTISTS. Dr. Hamilton's current research concerns climate change and environment-society interactions in the Arctic.

Best Stata review for serous applications

I am an advanced PhD student in economics and use Stata 8 at the moment. I love every page of this book! Although I only owned it for a few months, I think I will need to repurchase the same edition because I over-used this one.

The definitions are clear, applications are precise, and readibility is superb! i highly recommend this book if you are intermediate in economics or better. The Stata part I think is for most levels. Very enjoyable!

Excellent reference tool

I'm a PhD student at a Top 25 business school. In much of my research I do a lot of econometric analysis. If you already have used statistical software before, then not only is Stata with all its support the package to use, but this book by Hamilton should be your quickstart guide.
It is very easy to read, and very logical. But probably most importantly, at the beginning of each chapter it provides example commands, along with popular parameters you might use along with those commands. Which means that if you are familiar with what kind of analysis you want, typing it into Stata is just 2 minutes away with the help of this book.
My only complaint -- and it is a significant one I believe -- is that this reference doesn't do a very good job of describing the panel data commands. Granted, panel data may be a little advanced for this "tidy" thing but I think even 20-25 pgs of panel data analysis and examples would have improved the entire presentation immensely.

Switching over in a vacuum?

Drawn by the usability and features, likely you're considering switching to Stata from SAS, SPSS, LIMDEP, or other similar statistical package. This was the same situation I was facing. I bought this book on a whim, while ordering Stata7. It provides a good overview of Stata's features and tells you the commands for common features you use often with your old stats package. A really nice feature is that each topic shows multiple levels of depth for the focal model. For example the section on multiple regression starts with the OLS command, but on the same "2 pages for quick overview" shows a dozen or so of the more advanced commands you're likely to need for incremental regression analysis, 1-way effects, 2-way x-section time-series regresions and others. A very useful structure... which allows the reader to see the tree of related commands on 2-pages for each topic.
It's a nice substitute (and even a compliment) for a collegue who already knows Stata. You're unlikely to be using this book for more than a week initially, but may refer back to it before opening the Stata User's Guide when starting a new project that requires a method that you haven't yet used in Stata.

Tales of the Otori rivals Lord of the Rings.

I wrote a full review on the third volume, Brilliance Of The Moon. This trilogy to my mind comes close to the profound enjoyment I have had since the 1960's in reading Lord of the Rings. This is a brilliant piece of work, involving a vast but well described cast of characters in over a period of roughly 40 years in a land invented by the author Lian Hearn, that resembles medieval Japan. There are warriors, there are many different cultures in this highly structured society. There is a deep love story that fits well with the warrior culture, and it is amazing to watch the growth of the two main characters (Otori Takeo and Shirakawa Kaede) from their difficult early childhood into their ultimate success in forming a nation out of rival clans. It is filled with genuine tragedy, ninja-like skills, fascinating details of ordinary life. Mr. Hearn created an entire world extraordinarily well, and it is one of my all time favorite books, almost as good, certainly as enjoyable to read or listen to, as Lord of the Rings.

Across the Nightingale Floor

I hate to give this book only 3 stars, but I think I have to! As much as I loved the story, I just felt like the book was watered down over all. When Heran gave details in the story, they were wonderful! Beautiful! I could picture the heron in the pond. I could imagine the sounds of the nightingale floor (perhaps my favorite part of the book!), but for me, these magical parts were few and far between. Much of the sword play and training were left to my imagination. Most of the bonding between the characters was also, sadly, left to my imagination. Then before I knew it I was 80% into the book and it got sooo good, then by 85% the climax was over! I feel like I read the outline or the rough draft of the true story. That some how the finished product is out there still waiting for me to read. Loved the book, yet disappointed at the same time...

The mini book that helped him me on reading

I first read this book when I was much younger. I bought it in an underground mall on my way through Toronto with my mom. The lights were dark underground and their weren't that many people in the mask so it gave me a secretive feeling owning such a small book that could fit in my pocket.

It's story that focused on quiet observation, secrecy and intrigue helped with that secretive air. The quiet intimacy of the story and it's matter of fact language had me giving up book after book of this series. The artwork on the cover too, a figure so still in the face of the tumultuous rain attracts the eye. I absolutely loved this book.

Looking back it's story is rather simple but I'm still so happy to be rereading it.

Myth: Fossil fuels are unsustainable, so we should strive to use “renewable” solar and wind.
Truth: The sun and wind are intermittent, unreliable fuels that always need backup from a reliable source of energy—usually fossil fuels. There are huge amounts of fossil fuels left, and we have plenty of time to find something cheaper.

Myth: Fossil fuels are hurting the developing world.
Truth: Fossil fuels are the key to improving the quality of life for billions of people in the developing world. If we withhold them, access to clean water plummets, critical medical machines like incubators become impossible to operate, and life expectancy drops significantly. Calls to “get off fossil fuels” are calls to degrade the lives of innocent people who merely want the same opportunities we enjoy in the West.

Taking everything into account, including the facts about climate change, Epstein argues that “fossil fuels are easy to misunderstand and demonize, but they are absolutely good to use. And they absolutely need to be championed. . . . Mankind’s use of fossil fuels is supremely virtuous—because human life is the standard of value and because using fossil fuels transforms our environment to make it wonderful for human life.”

Mr. Epstein stakes out a new position in the fossil fuel debate!

I found the book very interesting and worth reading. I do agree with most of the assertions in the book, but not all. It is rather unfortunate that the author sometimes resorts to the same type of [edited] biased sources and omniscient voice that makes the me doubt the claims of many environmentalists.

Full disclosure: I have worked in the oil & gas industry my entire career, however I do not dismiss climate change and feel strongly about the need to be environmentally responsible. Many environmentalists seem to believe that if you make your living from fossil fuel extraction that you can't possibly hold these views. They are wrong, and I can honestly report that the people I work with in the industry do not fold their horns back into their heads at the end of the work day. They are mostly honest, caring and responsible people - from the field operator to the corner office. The oil & gas industry does not have a preferential appeal to people of poor character and irresponsible views.

We live in an age where decisions about energy policy and personal energy use must be made in a balanced way. We are indeed dependent on fossil fuel energy, for many of the reasons the author presents in this book. And like him, I do not think that is a bad thing for our planet. Why -- because I know our human nature will drive us to discover alternatives that will eventually blend to jointly address the characteristics he puts forward -- cheap, plentiful, reliable and scalable. In the meantime it would be wildly irresponsible to artificially restrict (from a market point-of-view) the use of fossil fuels. In order to continue the scientific innovation required to eventually retire the use of fossil fuels, we need to continue to produce and use fossil fuels.

It's time that we recognize that there is a logical, sound, fact-based position in the middle of the frothing debate occurring on the fringes in both extremes of the scale. I was hoping this book would stake out the ground for this position, but I did not completely resonate with the message from the author. It is an interesting book that make good points that need to be considered by all, but still does not comfortably define my own position. The debate on energy policy should be about AND, not OR.

Game Changer

You may think you've read it all when it comes to Fossil Fuels.
You haven't.

Whether you're a 'thought leader', an 'industry shill' or somebody in between, you will be surprised, one way or the other, with Moral Case for Fossil Fuels. I'm somewhat familiar with author Alex Epstein and all he does. Yet I was surprised by the premises contained in MCFF. Pleasantly surprised, I might add.

Full disclosure: I *wish* I was paid off by Industry. I'm the starving artist type: part-time job, full-time wannabe writer. I read this book on my phone, while walking to and from work. However, I reckon I can spare a few hours to thank Epstein for presenting me with an exceedingly rare pick-me-up to keep me going during the rough days. Despite being so absorbed an SUV nearly ran me over. At least it wasn't a Prius!

Moral Case for Fossil Fuels has content you've never been exposed to before. Ever wondered which industry enables you to do anything at all? Build a home? Take a pill? Skype with a friend or loved one? Vacation in another country? Survive on life support? Eat and drink anything you want, whenever you want? Read this review? Live a few more years? Sure, it's the computing, communications, medical, transportation and agricultural industries. Guess what enables those?

Don't hold your breath for Greens to explain that. You'll turn blue. Which makes me see red.

So why have I awarded this masterpiece only four out of five stars?
Politics. And book reviews in general.

I imagine most five-star reviews will be breezed over or ignored, to be taken as friends lending a hand or other self-interested sources adding their money's worth (oh the humanity!).
Ditto the one-stars: Greenies gonna hate.

The rating system has a mere maximum of five stars. Personally, I give this at least thirty-seven stars - roughly one for each and every premise Epstein presents throughout his book.

People who share his views will buy Moral Case for Fossil Fuels. As I do and have. That's hopefully a given. Also, much as a passing pigeon poops on a Pagani, the Greenies will do their little drive-by smears. If I had a dollar every time I read something like 'industry shill', I could buy *their* opinions.

Meanwhile, I genuinely hope any 'thought leaders' shall put some time and effort into refuting the arguments contained in this book. I - and no doubt Epstein as well - am genuinely curious about how they will respond, both here and elsewhere. You bring the butter and popcorn, I'll sell the tickets. We'll use the proceeds to fund a prototype cold fusion reactor. That'll give 'em convulsions. Talk about idiot children!

If you, dear potential purchaser, have read this review in it's entirety, it is precisely *you* to whom Epstein wants to reach out to. Perhaps the title evoked a reaction of some sort. Maybe you've heard about it via the grapevine or the pipeline and want to know more. Perhaps you need a reference for a school project. Or perhaps you're more the inquisitive type, willing to set aside your squirmies for five minutes and see what the hubbub is about.

The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels may well prove to be industry's Atlas Shrugged. The 'thought leaders' will hate it. It'll be fashionable to pan it. Yet I suspect many, many people will buy and read it. The kind of people who live in the real world. The kind who read the 2-4 star reviews. The kind like you and me.

A thought-provoking, well-reasoned, and sustained inquiry into the costs and benefits of our massive use of fossil fuels.

I was in turn provoked and intrigued by this book. I was mostly expecting a strident litany of right-wing talking points and climate change denial. What I found was a thought-provoking examination of the costs and benefits of our massive use of fossil fuels. I was continuously surprised by both the research I was reading about and the reasonable perspective the author invited me to take. With each chapter, I found my own perspective widening to include information I hadn't thought about or encountered before, despite having studied climate change for well over 1000 hours over the last few years. I am still a bit stunned about that.

I believe that the topic of energy and the environment is one of the most important social conversations of the next decade. The costs (and potential costs) of using fossil fuels for energy are well publicized. The benefits are generally unstated or downplayed. This book shows us the critical importance of weighing the costs against the benefits to make optimal decisions for both people and planet.

I stand confident that whether you like or dislike the book, you will profit from reading it, and be provoked to clarify your own stance on what may be the most contentious issue of our time.

Martin Mowforth lecturers at the University of Plymouth in the UK and is the co-author of Tourism and Sustainability: Development, Globalisation and New Tourism in the Third World (2009) and Tourism and Responsibility: Perspectives from Latin America and the Caribbean (2008). He is editor of the newsletter of the Environmental Network for Central America (ENCA).
