It was never supposed to be this close. And of course she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the riveting story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgment about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Hillary's campaign--the candidate herself.
Through deep access to insiders from the top to the bottom of the campaign, political writers Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes have reconstructed the key decisions and unseized opportunities, the well-intentioned misfires and the hidden thorns that turned a winnable contest into a devastating loss. Drawing on the authors' deep knowledge of Hillary from their previous book, the acclaimed biography HRC, Shattered offers an object lesson in how Hillary herself made victory an uphill battle, how her difficulty articulating a vision irreparably hobbled her impact with voters, and how the campaign failed to internalize the lessons of populist fury from the hard-fought primary against Bernie Sanders.
Moving blow-by-blow from the campaign's difficult birth through the bewildering terror of election night, Shattered tells an unforgettable story with urgent lessons both political and personal, filled with revelations that will change the way readers understand just what happened to America on November 8, 2016.

Review
“[A] compelling new book... It’s the story of a wildly dysfunctional and ‘spirit-crushing’ campaign that embraced a flawed strategy (based on flawed data) that failed, repeatedly, to correct course... The blow-by-blow details in Shattered are nothing less than devastating... In fact, the portrait of the Clinton campaign that emerges from these pages is that of a Titanic-like disaster: an epic fail made up of a series of perverse and often avoidable missteps by an out-of-touch candidate and her strife-ridden staff.”
—New York Times
“How did she lose? Providing that answer is the mission accepted by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes inShattered… They saw and heard far more than most of us, exploring deep inside ‘Clintonworld’ in search of the real story. And in these pages, they share enough of what they witnessed to enable us to reach our own conclusions… Allen and Parnes offer a first bridge beyond the journalism of the campaign year to the scholarship of the historians and other scholars who will process all this material for generations to come.”
—NPR
“Told largely through background interviews with campaign staff and a tangle [of] Clinton insiders, the book is a comprehensive chronicle of how her quest for the White House lurched and sputtered toward ignominious defeat… [Shattered is] richly reported.”
—TIME
"What Allen and Parnes captured in Shattered was a far more revealing portrait of the Democratic Party intelligentsia than, say, the WikiLeaks dumps. And while the book is profoundly unflattering to Hillary Clinton, the problem it describes really has nothing to do with Secretary Clinton. The real protagonist of this book is a Washington political establishment that has lost the ability to explain itself or its motives to people outside the Beltway... If the ending to this story were anything other than Donald Trump being elected president, Shattered would be an awesome comedy, like a Kafka novel—a lunatic bureaucracy devouring itself. But since the ending is the opposite of funny, it will likely be consumed as a cautionary tale."
—Matt Taibbi, Rolling Stone
“A riveting account of the final, dreadful hours of Clinton’s long pursuit of the presidency… Thanks to Allen and Parnes, we now know how Clinton reacted, at the moment she was supposed to become the first female president.”
—Denver Post
“[Shattered] sheds particular light on the painful turn of events on election night, as Clinton watched the returns deviate dramatically from the path her campaign had so confidently predicted… As the first take on Clinton’s doomed campaign, [Allen and Parnes] offer a behind-the-scenes view of the obstacles in her way—some familiar and others a consequence of the shifting American electorate.”
—The Guardian

“Hillary Clinton’s loss at the hands of Donald Trump last November is the single biggest upset in modern presidential politics. I’ve spent the intervening months trying to understand what Clinton’s defeat said about the electorate, about Clinton and about the campaign she ran. Now, there’s a book that does all of that for me!”
—CNN
“In the last weeks before the election, the Hillary Clinton campaign did no polling… This is one of the thousand revelations in Shattered, the new book by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes that, for political junkies, redefines the word ‘juicy’ for our time… Allen and Parnes pile up headshaking detail after headshaking detail from the very beginning of her campaign to its end.”
—New York Post

Excellent

Fascinating read, couldn't stop reading all day until I had finished the book entirely. Excellent use of journalism to create a cohesive narrative and tell the story from behind the scenes. From the personal views of Clinton's aides to the coverage of her opponents, November's election is given more detail and description. I especially enjoyed my own ability to match up the events in the book with my own memories of the campaign trail timeline and the press coverage at those key moments. Furthermore it was refreshing to read what few want to acknowledge, that the blame appears to not solely lie on factors outside the campaign machine and candidate. I'm glad I purchased this, it far surpasses in quality the scattered and much shorter opinion pieces on the internet that speculate the question of how Hillary could have lost.

53% of the women didn't vote for Hillary Clinton. Here's why. And its not "sexism" or "Russia".
By C.R
Bought early this morning and Im in the last half of it.
Allen and Parnes are (awarded) political journalists. They DO NOT LIKE TRUMP AT ALL (the intro is crystal clear). They did a long (very long) research and conducted numerous interviews (since 2014) of people inside Hillary's campaign to reconstruct the story of that spectacular defeat, who were the players and why they lost.
The people giving 1 star to this book didnt read it.
The people giving 1 star to this book are likely to give 5 stars to an emotions over facts book like "The destruction of Hillary Clinton" who's claiming that sexism, and not her own campaign, brought HRC down.
The authors of "Shattered (...)" are clearly democrats. They wrote other (awarded) political books prior to this one so they know their topics.
And no, sorry, sexism and Russia are not the reasons why she lost.
The DNC must address the real reasons why and cleanup accordingly. So far they don't.

"What difference - at this point, what difference does this make?"
By Boetius
Amie Parnes was C-Span’s contact person in the Hillary Clinton Headquarters on election night. She clearly enjoyed open access to the inner circle of the campaign, and she, just as clearly, was an enthusiastic cheerleader. This became more understandable when it was revealed during the broadcast that she was to be a co-author of a scheduled publication that was to chronicle and celebrate semi-officially Hillary Clinton’s “historic” (a word frequently used that night, and one increasingly tinged with irony as the evening progressed) ascendancy to the presidency. When things began to go wrong, Parnes’ bubbly persona was replaced by that of the grim reporter. No doubt some of her despair was founded in the expectation of the apparent demise of her grand and potentially very lucrative project.
But with opportunistic dexterity, she and Jonathan Allen have pivoted to produce Shattered, an account of Hillary Clinton’s political Armageddon. Although suffering from hasty composition e.g. important data and trivia are often given equal weight, events are a rule artlessly cobbled together in a strictly chronological order, and a truly mature analysis of the Hillary Campaign will have to wait until the record becomes more complete, this is an important book that makes a real contribution.
The plot is worthy of Greek Tragedy (or a comic book movie). It is a story of hubris and self-regard married to self-defeating insecurity and a desperate need for love and acceptance. Allen and Parnes do their best to paint their subject in noble colors by omitting entirely the well-documented and never-denied drunken breakdowns and vulgar abuse of those around her. But what remains still makes it clear that Hillary Clinton is not a normal person. Instead, she emerges as a kind of political vampire, who long ago traded her soul to be sustained “eternally” only by an insatiable hunger for power, wealth, and importance. For decades she inveigled and schemed for the presidency, using every step - senator, failed candidate, and secretary of state – as mere means to the great end. And everything has always been such a struggle. The “vast right-wing conspiracy,” a deviant, unfaithful, but brilliant husband, Barrack Obama, Joe Biden, Sanders, Anthony Weiner, Comey, and then Trump, all kept poor Hillary in constant battle and depression. Worse, her greatest nemesis repeatedly proved to be herself, as when from a desire to protect herself from scrutiny, she used a private email server – and then refused to acknowledge and to apologize for the wrong-headedness of her decision.
However, she is not presented in Shattered as entirely devoid of human qualities. Those close to her are quoted as speaking of a warm, humorous, and compassionate personality. But in fairness, and without meaning to draw a direct comparison and simply to make a point, those around Hitler said much the same thing. Nor was the campaign without humorous moments as when Hillary decreed an interview was to be given to “Brianna,” by which she meant Brianna Golodryga of Yahoo! News, the wife of a former Clinton advisor. Afraid or unwilling to question the decree, the staff arranged a meeting with Brianna Keliar of CNN, whose sharp questions sent Hillary into one of her famous livid fugues.
This is a complex account of a complex woman that in places inspires empathy and even a degree of respect. What it does not do is explain why she ever mattered, or why anything she has ever done, including her “public service,” contributed anything truly meaningful to her country and its future. In the end, we are left with her own quote: “What difference - at this point what difference does this make?”
