Good book, but not adequate preparation for exam
By Love To Shop Amazon
I took the HIT-001 yesterday and I passed it, but I can't say this book was a big help. I have been in the IT industry for 8 years and have worked in a healthcare setting for the last 3 years. 90% of the reason I passed the exam is because my current job role and previous experience gave me enough knowledge to get enough of the questions right. This book provided some help, but it is definitely not enough of its own and unfortunately with this being a very new certification there is not much in the way of study material for it yet. I do want to stress that the book contains some great information that will be very useful if you work in a Healthcare IT position. It does a good job of giving you a basic understanding of common healthcare occupations, facilities, hospital departments, patient flow, data flow, and how your job as a technician is easier when you have knowledge of these things. The problem is, the actual subject matter of the test seemed very broad and this book either completely skipped or only briefly mentioned a lot of it. There are several questions on the exam about project management and implementation, and that is not adequately covered in this book. The same can be said for other subjects, such as physical security (too brief), encryption and authentication protocols (they're mentioned but no examples of where and how they're used in healthcare), the organizational aspect of healthcare is covered but the financial side of that is not despite seeing some of it on the test, and overall the parts of the book that are purely about technical troubleshooting are too brief. I have an A+, Net+ and Security+, and I've read parts of the Project+ book. This exam seems to be a combination of all of those, mixed with information about privacy laws and healthcare. Putting everything necessary for this test seems like it would be a challenge, but at the very least I believe any worthwhile book for this exam should have an entire chapter dedicated to the material from the Project+, A+, Net+ and Security+ exams individually rather than lumping it all in to one chapter and giving a brief version of it. Without knowledge of the material from those exams, anyone that buys this book and relies solely on this as a study guide will fail the exam.
Another thing about the book that I found to be an annoyance is that it is the first exam prep book I've ever owned that didn't come with the eBook on the CD that came with it. Instead, you have to buy it separately and apparently get some additional simulation test questions along with it. The test simulator that came with this book was only moderately useful because it doesn't seem to draw from a very large pool of questions. If you set it up to do a 200 question practice test, you'll see several of the questions more than once. After you're finished if you do it again, you'll notice that you're not seeing any new questions. A 200 question pool to draw from is not very effective preparation for an exam that has 75 questions.
To summarize, this book is good as a source of information if you simply want to learn a bit about the healthcare setting from an IT standpoint. But if you plan to use it to prepare for the exam, you're wasting your money.

CompTIA Healthcare IT Technician
By Pancuco
I'm been using Jean Andrews books for some years now on my CompTIA A+ classes, so the name is not new to me. This book is written by Joy Dark and Jean Andrews. For my surprise, Joy Dark is the daughter of Jean Andrews.
As a trainer I'm been in the process of evaluating books and resources for my HIT classes. I firmly believe that the book is an extension of the trainer and vice-versa. I need to feel confident with the book and its content in order to use it as part of my class. Well, at the end of the story, I've reviewed three books for this subject, and Joy Dark's is the better one.
The CompTIA Healthcare IT Technician HIT-001 Authorized Cert Guide is a very good looking book, easy to understand, has an excellent presentation and is also very easy to read. This book covers all exam objectives for Healthcare IT Technician certificate. And this is something we have to look in a book conducting to any Industry certification or certificate. In addition, the author uses a clear way to explain every word and technical/healthcare concept without leaving the exam perspective. The author captures the attention in every page until the last by using a clear language, nice graphics that support the reading, an entertaining and simple way to explain the topics, but without losing the seriousness and importance of some legal aspects like HIPAA and others.
At the end of each chapter, the author makes a series of drills that help to measure our strengths and weaknesses, so that you can feel comfortable before you start reading a new chapter or reread the last if necessary.
Without any doubt, I recommend this book. Whether you're a student and want to do a study on your own, or if you are a trainer looking for a reference book for your class: this is your book.
Welcome, Joy, and thanks for this great work!

Well Arranged, Easy To Follow, Easy To Read.
By Jeffrey W. Mortenson
I've been working on my "next certification" since 1995! I accomplished my first MSCE and am constantly in pursuit of another certification to test and prove my knowledge.
I do consulting work for several clients who are Healthcare related, and I have certified systems to be HIPAA compliant, however, I simply used the checklist provided, never truly understanding the process or the system. I can say I understand the process much better, thanks in part, to this book.
The CompTIA Healthcare IT Technician HIT-001 Authorized Cert Guide opened my eyes to a new arena. I was enlightened on the various regulations governing the Healthcare industry. Retention and security aside, there are a lot of regulations established to protect a client's medical information from falling into the hands of those, who have no business seeing them. Sure, some of the chapters hit on areas that are common in Security+, Network+, and the A+ certifications, but that's because it's necessary, if you already know it - move on!
I read almost every page with a desire to provide a comprehensive review of the guide, I simply can't do that, the topic and the book is far to vast. I can say, once again, it's presented and written well, the flow is easy to follow and not overpowering. I looked at my weaknesses prior to reading the book and easily found I had bridged the gap between my lack of experience and general knowledge.
On a side note, I am privileged to know some of the CompTIA Subject Matter Experts for Healthcare IT Technician Cert, and can honestly say they have created as comprehensive a certification as they possibly could for the industry.
