A Seminal, Challenging Analysis of Puritan Thought and its Importance in the Shaping of American Identity

Sacvan Bercovitch, Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University, presents in this important book an analysis of what he refers to as the "rhetoric of American identity" through the "sources of our obsessive concern with the meaning of America" (p. ix). He uses one central case study to explore this issue, "Nehemias Americanus," Cotton Mather's biography of John Winthrop, first published in 1702. In Winthrop Mather discovered not only "a reliable model of christic identity" (p. 24) but also the "idea of the exemplary American" (p. 35). This is especially because of Winthrop's sense of progress, wherein a "redemptive history" merged personal worth with national mission. Puritans, in Bercovitch's vision, saw themselves as "American Israelites, the sole reliable exegetes of a new, last book of scripture" (p. 113). He argues that Cotton Mather, perhaps the epitome of the Puritan thinker, assigned America the status of a "microcosm of the worldwide work of redemption, and macrocosm of the redemptive work underway in each of its chosen people" (p. 134). This blending of personal story--essentially a spiritual biography--with a national prophecy and mission has been a persistent theme in American history and was first apparent in the writings of the early American Puritans.

Bercovitch goes a step further with his analysis, however, by noting that this Puritan approach to personal/national identity provided a handy but complex structure for later generations to think of their place in the world. The result was a belief in human perfectibility and a strong utopian impulse in American intellectual thought and political tradition. From Thomas Jefferson's stirring statement in the Declaration of Independence that people must work to ensure that all receive their unalienable rights of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," to the sense of destiny in recent America, the quest for a better world has been a major subtext of every aspect of American life. As Bercovitch shows, this strain of thought offers a "celebration of the representative self as America, and of the American self as the embodiment of a prophetic universal design" (p. 136).

"The Puritan Origins of the American Self" is a difficult reading experience. It uses the language of hermeneutics in its analysis and routinely employs such jargon as "auto-American-autobiography." More importantly, some may appropriately conclude that Bercovitch overstates his case, questioning if the Puritan mindset permeated American character to the degree he claims. Even so, this is required reading for students of early American history. It offers an important interpretation of the intellectual legacy of Puritan thought on the United States.

Brilliant and Indispensable

This is the single most important study of the formation of "America"--its culture, history and literature. Professor Bercovitch's brilliant analysis of these Puritan texts should be essential reading to anyone even remotely interested in undertanding the often bizarre nature of American society. Working with original Puritan chronicles, diaries and other texts, Bercovitch shows that so much of what we take for granted in this culture has a distinctly Puritan origin. Read this book, and you will never view any aspect of this country the same way again.

Excellent but claims too much

Bercovitch proves his case that the Boston Puritans set the tone for the American mind, especially its belief that it had a special mission (from God) to create a 'city on a hill' which would redeem the rest of the world, especially decadent Europe. One can hear the same rhetoric from Presidents Kennedy, Reagan and GW Bush. Hence the name 'New' England, to distinguish the colony from bad 'olde' England. Bercovitch shows that Cotton Mather was the first to use the word "America" like we do, as a distinct place populated by people similar but different from Europe. Thus, as early as the 1600's, the colonists were thinking of themselves as Americans, and the split in identity with England would grow only wider, culminating in the inevitable revolution.

The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that Bercovitch claims that Cotton Mather's ideology stretched all the way to RW Emerson. While there may be some external similarities in both stressing the uniqueness of America, the differences between the two are much more prominent. Succinctly, Emerson stood against virtually everything Mather stood for, staunchly denying Mather's Calvinist Christianity, veering past Unitarianism into agnostic pantheism. In the end, Emerson's deconstruction of biblical religion has contributed to the devastation of the 'nation' that Mather knew, one based on Biblical ethics.

Old Time Skill to Learn for the Modern Age

This is a great book to read and keep. There's a dissertation of what vinegar actually is and what commercially made vinegars are and aren't. It is totally comprehensive and analytical in its discussion of converting honey to vinegar and the health benefits to be derived . And considering the 'age' of this booklet ( printed in 1905, it's fairly short with only about 94 or more Kindle 'pages' ) , it's quite practical for most anybody today who would like to have a good, natural fully flavored vinegar for use in the home.
It's a great read even if you don't try to make your own vinegar but I fully intend to make my own with this book's help.

I found this ebook version of an antique text to be completely charming. It's short, just a few pages, but gives a terrific overview (and argument for) making vinegar from honey. As a beekeeper and vinegar maker, I agree with most everything the author says about the fantastic attributes of honey and its superiority over most every other sugar source in the world. This was a really fun read, and I'm happy to have it in my collection of weird old cookery books.

About the Author
Svetlana Alexievich was born in Ivano-Frankivsk in 1948 and has spent most of her life in the Soviet Union and present-day Belarus, with prolonged periods of exile in Western Europe. Starting out as a journalist, she developed her own, distinctive non-fiction genre which brings together a chorus of voices to describe a specific historical moment. Her works include The Unwomanly Face of War (1985), Last Witnesses (1985), Boys in Zinc (1991), Chernobyl Prayer (1997) and Second-Hand Time (2013). She has won many international awards, including the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature for 'her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time'.

Interesting perspectives from survivors across the spectrum but at times wordy and verbose. I think that some of the monologues in particular could have been edited to improve readability.

Painful to read; ostrich like to not do so

Svetlana Alexievich’s Chernobyl Prayer, the account of ordinary Belarusians whose lives and land were horribly affected by the reactor blowing, is a difficult, horrifying and yet unavoidable read. At least, unavoidable if you believe we need to face terrible reality, and acknowledge it, however much not thinking about it seems the best, pain avoiding option

Alexievich lets her contributors tell their stories. This is certainly not a book to read cover to cover; so much horror can’t be borne, and in fact the only response to trying to do that is a kind of numbing and deadening, as the reader tries to protect herself from the awful reality.

This is not an account of politics, cover up, science, official speak. It is ordinary voices, and therefore, full of individual response. Some are even remarkably stoical and even manage to bear up with fortitude in the face of something which seems unbearably grim – the ticking time-bomb caused by impossible exposure to radioactivity following the reactor’s blow-out

There are a few thoughts which struck home. Inevitably, the heroism, even if no one quite understood the terrible danger of the firefighters who went in to contain the damage, and prevent the other reactors from also cracking.

Secondly, many of the people she interviewed had the most astonishing, deep love of place and land. Something perhaps harder for those of us who live less rooted lives, less connected to the time and place of our ancestral past, to understand. These are people, who knowing the danger, chose to secretly, illegally return to their damaged land, because to live apart from in, in cities, was no life. They mourned their land and their connection to it

Time and again people talk about how the animals, birds and insects responded immediately to the disaster, and yet, the people did not know – beekeepers reporting their bees stayed in their hives for days and did not come out. Fisherman, using worms for bait, discovering they couldn’t find any worms, because they had burrowed so deeply into the earth. I found that strange and sobering too, some sense which we have lost

Alexievich, in her own take on this writes this to show :
‘we now find ourselves on a new page of history. The history of disasters has begun. But people do not want to reflect on that , because they have never thought about it before, preferring to take refuge in the familiar’

She opens the book with the sobering, horrifying account of the life and death of one of the firefighters, recounted by his widow (herself, horribly affected by contamination) Lyudmila Ignatenko, pregnant, was instructed not to touch or go close to her dying husband Vasily. In full knowledge of the danger to herself and her unborn child, she ignored the advice, and chose to touch, kiss and give human contact . She was told :

“You musn’t forget this isn’t your husband, it isn’t the man you love, it’s a highly contaminated radioactive object.”

I was humbled by Lyudmila, and by Vasily. And this is just one story of many

Star rating seems impossible. I hate it - I hate that this happened and needs to be recounted, to say 'I love it' is monstrous. I will settle for 4 star, But it is to my mind unrateable. Dreadful, important, necessary. I feel the need to read each person's story, but cannot do this cover to cover, without long gaps, as it seems wrong to shut down feeling, but so much horror can't be consciously endured for long

I received this as a review copy for Amazon Vine, UK. I was ambivalent about asking for it, knowing that the experience would be as the title to my review suggests

Devastation at Chernobyl

Svetlana Alexievich deploys her unique gift of collating people’s experiences, reflections and insights into a powerful statement of the Chernobyl event. She shows how people can report in greater depth than journalists. The devastation of the land, the dreadful deaths of children, of clean-up workers, the primacy of the Soviet state over people’s desperate immediate need, constitute an account of utter human sorrow. It’s a call for accountability which all bureaucracies seek to avoid.

"A promising start"

This is a gritty suspense with good characterisation. Part One of this story has 'light and shade' too which is a welcome change. There are several tense, even frightening moments of action, but in between there's still time for a little romance and laughter.
